A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) helps the nurse in patient care. They are in the front lines of patient care interacting on a one on one basis with the patient. A CNA helps the patient in doing the physical things that an invalid patient is incapable of doing. They also assist in other clinical monitoring for a patient. They provide service to individuals that are either elderly, physically disabled, mentally or chronically ill and other individuals that would need special care. The CNA profession is a growing profession and is now in demand since there are also a growing number of elderly people.

Responsibilities of a Nursing Assistant

Some responsibilities of a CNA would be the proper care for a patient. To become a certified nursing assistant, you should be able to properly bathe, groom and feed the patient. A CNA should be able to know the body mechanics of a person so that it would be easy for both the CNA and the patient.

To become a certified nursing assistant, you should know that you will need patience and have respect for the patient’s dignity. A CNA should always knock when entering. A CNA should know how to monitor a patient’s pulse, respiration rate, heart rate and the like. They should also know how to respond to emergencies and be able to stay calm in times of crisis. Patience is the key to being a CNA for you will be dealing with different types of patients. Types of patients can vary from just being elderly to physically or verbally abusive patients. Learning to deal with these types of patients will benefit you throughout your career of being a CNA.

Benefits of Being a Nursing Assistant

There are a lot of benefits when you become a certified nursing assistant. Being a CNA might not be the most glorious job in the nursing profession but there are a lot of rewards. The first most visible reward would be the profession itself.

This type of profession does not require a college diploma but would only require a GED or a high school diploma with an addition that you would need to have CNA certification training and will need to take the CNA certification exam.

With a short six to twelve weeks of training the potential salary of a CNA is worthwhile. Another benefit is that some people use becoming as a stepping stone to becoming a Registered Nurse since the coursework taken could be taken into credit when taking a nursing class.

Where to Get the Training

There is a lot of training available to become a certified nursing assistant. There are online CNA training programs and there are facilities that offer CNA training. Some institutions even offer free CNA training to people. You would just need to check with your local/State Department of Health on the requirements of being a CNA and check which institution meets those requirements. Learning all the required textbook bound and skills training and you will certainly be on your way on becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.
