To obtain certification one requires to train for a specified number of hours and to pass a state examination. Training costs differ from state to state and from institution to institution. CNA is an entry-level position for those who would like to work in the medical field. Training as a certified nursing assistant is also a stepping-stone for those who would like to further their careers in future. The training program does not extend for a very long. It generally lasts 3 months. Free CNA Training is Available From Two Sources

The first place to search for it is at any state department of health.  Most states run a sponsorship program for those who are willing but cannot afford to pay for CNA training. Some states have set up a grant to finance tuition for those who cannot are in need.

Where to Find Free CNA Training?

The second place to check is any large home for senior citizens in your locality. These homes are constantly looking for nursing assistants to cater for their growing residential population. They always advertise in the dailies about available opportunities that exist in those homes. In an attempt to fill such vacancies these institutions now offer free CNA training on site for those who meet their requirements. The training is provided free subject to a contractual agreement stating that the student will work for the institution for a specified period in return.

Beneficiaries of free CNA training attend theoretical classes and hands-on training where the student does practical work within the facility under supervision. After successful completion of the training program, the student completes a state exam. If the candidate passes the state examination, he/she is hired by the institution to work on either a full time or a part time basis as a certified nursing assistant.

Who Pays Really for ‘Free’ CNA Training?

In return for accessing free training, the successful certified nursing assistant must meet the contract requirements, which are to work in the institution for a specific period according to the provisions of the contract. Most institutions will require the successful CNA to work for at least one year in the facility after which he/she is free to go.

A breach of the contract agreement has negative consequences for the CNA. If he or she departs before the contract period is over, then he/she is has to refund part or all of the cost of tuition.

In conclusion, free CNA training is actually a misnomer. In this world, there is nothing for free. Someone always ends up paying for it. In the case of free CNA training, the student does not pay tuition fees upfront but is required to ‘compensate’ the institution by serving with it for a specified period.
